Westwood Instruments – Upright Felt Piano (KONTAKT)

We tried the piano in the crypt churches. The instrument has been there for the past 10 years since the well-known band recorded all of their albums in this incredible place. The space consists of stone walls and vaulted ceilings, providing some interesting acoustics.

We wanted to tame the bright sound of the piano, so we felt the strings in our own way to remove the top, but not to lose any of its unique properties. What we have left is a beautiful warm and intimate sound.

We used a world-class first-class signal path, recording everything at 96 kHz through the legendary Neve 1073 preamplifiers and Burr Brown AD converters.

The signal began with a suitable pair of Coles 4038, which were as close as we dared to bring them to the hammers to get a really detailed sound. The AKG 414 stereo pair did a great job recording sound in a more open room. We also used one SE-2 next to the rear deck. This microphone position provides a truly vintage sound.

All of these microphones can be mixed independently through the Kontakt interface, so you can choose exactly the sound you need.
