Surge XT v1.3.4 is a free, open-source synthesizer for Windows that combines several synthesis methods, including subtractive and FM, and provides sound designers with extremely flexible sound creation options.
Each patch contains two independent scenes that can be layered or split by range, and each scene features three oscillators with twelve algorithms to choose from. These range from classic waveforms and wavetables to physical string modeling and the unique Twist macro oscillator.
The modulation system deserves special attention. Twelve LFOs with extensive capabilities, from simple waves to step sequencers, multi-segment envelopes (MSEGs), and even Lua-based modulators, allow you to control virtually any synthesizer parameter. Completing the package are two filters with multiple types and routing modes, 43 waveshapers, and 27 effects, including EQs, distortions, modulation, and reverb.
Surge XT runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats, supports MPE and microtuning, and its community is constantly developing the project, making it one of the most powerful free sound design tools.
