Imagiro Autochroma – is a fun new effects plugin that allows you to playfully explore granular synthesis in a variety of ways.

Granular synthesis seems to be a trending topic in 2023, including LoFi effect plugins. This can be seen in the impressive number of hardware granular synths announced at the last Superbooth (23), as well as the exponentially growing list of granular plugins.

Where before you had a very limited choice, today you have a large selection of synths and effects that go in that direction. Developers often try to cram in as many features as possible. However, this makes it difficult to use many of them.

Imagiro Autochroma

Imagiro, developer of LoFi Piano, is trying to do the opposite with the new Autochroma plugin. Fewer features for more fun and ease of use.

Autochroma is a new granular effects module for macOS and Windows. Like any other granular processor, incoming audio is broken down into hundreds of mini-parts (granules). Then they come out of the effect of random delay and frequency boost.

According to the developer, it stores the last 30 seconds of its output. You can drag and drop its contents directly from the plugin into your DAW at any time.
Three engines

The core of the plugin consists of three different engines. Each of them offers different delay manipulations and produces a different pitch in grains. Each engine gives you the ability to adjust grain length, envelope speed, pitch, and more.

Plus, you get four modulators to work with. including an envelope follower, a sine LFO, a pulse LFO, a macro modulator that allows you to combine two modulation signals, and a random modulator. You can map modulators to all parameters in the three engines, giving you endless possibilities for weird sounds.

Imagrio says that Autochroma is a plug-in not only for traditional grainy sounds, but also for a more unique timbre. You can use it as a drum thickener, wah filter, radio effect, chorus and even reverb.

The developer promises a playful, easy-to-use plugin that inspires and has fun. The same impression is produced by the interface of the plugin, which looks very attractive.

First Impression

At first glance, a very addictive granular plugin with a great user interface. Very attractive and not overloaded with features. I also like that you can see signal manipulation in real time.
