Sonora Cinematic – Mezza Coda (KONTAKT)

A charming baby grand piano with a vintage, rough edge. The Verticale baby grand piano’s counterpart is here. Mezza Coda offers a rich and authentic sound that captures the nuances and beauty of a baby grand piano, enhanced by the warmth and character of two unique signal layers.

Tape
Mezza Coda features the same ‘tape’ layer as our popular Verticale sample library, which adds a vintage feel and a touch of grit to the already stunning baby grand piano sound.
Just like we did for Verticale, we recorded the piano samples to tape using an old Portastudio rig at maximum speed, then converted those samples back to our digital audio system by slowing the tape down as much as possible.

Distbox
Additionally, Mezza Coda features a brand new signal layer called ‘Distbox’, sampled using a Portastudio as a distortion device.
We recorded a stereo mix of the piano to tape while simultaneously feeding the Portastudio’s preamps a very strong signal, then slowing the tape down. The result is a raw, distorted signal that gives the piano sound a unique character and texture, perfect for spiking your music or creating lo-fi vibes.

The Beautiful Baby Grand
With its unique combination of warmth, clarity, depth and character, Mezza Coda is ideal for a wide range of musical genres, from media and jazz to pop and electronica. Discover the power of a world-class baby grand sample library in vintage style.

Microphones
Like the Verticale, Mezza Coda offers three different mic positions, all stereo pairs: a room mic and two different spot mics.
There are a pair of ribbons and a pair of large diaphragm condensers that give you complete control over the piano’s tonality. Simply activate the mics using the small dot at the bottom of the fader and route them to different channels if you want to mix them separately in your DAW. Mezza Coda’s

FX
include two reverb and delay modes, both with multiple modes. You’ll also find a color control that works similar to a tilt EQ – move it to the left for a darker sound with more impact, or to the right for a more subtle and bright sound. Meanwhile, use the sync switch to switch between musical tempo sync and milliseconds values.
For a truly nostalgic sound, use the tape section with its Crunch control, which provides a truly juicy tape saturation, and Lo-Fi, a macro that controls the reduction of bits and sample rates. Want your audio to sound truly vintage? Just select mono!
