In orchestral arrangements, the xylophone commonly emphasizes certain parts of a melodic line in forte or fortissimo. The glockenspiel is frequently used in majestic brass fanfares, and can be heard even through a full orchestra playing “tutti”. The celesta spans five octaves and produces a soft, ethereal sound – true to its name, derived from the French word for “heavenly” (céleste).
